Interesting Things to Look At

Over the years we've scanned hundreds and hundreds of interesting images, engravings, photos, drawings, half-tones and other pictoria from books, magazines, prints, and for all we can remember laundry lists. Furthermore we've received offers from other image collectors of the things they've scanned, often in conjunction with the magazineart.org site we run. We've never had a place to put those images, but this is that place.

This is the starting point for our albums of albums of interesting things to look at, photos and printed things and stuff [all kinds].

While we were doing the magazine covers, we found that various sellers were often including high-quality scans of the prints and magazines they were selling. There isn't much data more evanescent than an eBay listing, so we started contacting them and arranging to use their scans on the magazineart.org site, displayed over the long term and linking back to the original supplier. (So, if someone really wanted to own a copy of the image, she knew where to start looking.) We're continuing that tradition here, and you'll find source links for every place we have them for, either in the album description or explicitly in the description of each image.

We're displaying the images using Gallery 2 software, an excellent album display package developed by enthusiasts and available for free via SourceForge. Recommended! It lets you choose from numerous design and layout options, and then configure them independently with your own additions and modifications. This site and the magazineart.org site are running off exactly the same core code, but using different theme packages and with different local variations.

So, what's in this site? Um, whatever we find that looks interesting. Travel paintings from 1650. Radio catalogs. Pictures of trains. Steel engravings of Indian temples and New York drawing rooms. You can go directly to any of these collections by clicking on the directory tree you'll find just below this site description. It will show you every kind of thing we have here; and you can click on any branch and go directly to it the branch or its relevant collection. The directory tree is always on the left of the screen, under the album description, until you reach the image itself, at which point the tree is on the right of the page (under the little rectangle with the very tiny mini-thumbnails).

Or, you can click on any of the thumbnails in the album window, and that will take you down a level, to that branch, or to the collection itself (at which point clicking on a thumbnail will give you the full version of the image).

You can go back to where you were before using the directory tree, or the line of "Breadcrumbs" in the top section of the page (the line just before the color changes a little bit); just click any of the words or phrases and you'll be taken to the album level it represents.

Some of the images we scanned ourselves, or friends and volunteers did the scans, and so we have full-sized scans that we can supply you (rates vary). In other cases, what you see is what there is. As far as we know, none of the images online here are under someone else's copyright; if you find something here that you feel belongs to you, let us know and we'll take it down while we try to sort things out. We're publishers ourselves, and try to do the right thing.

Finally, we'll never send you spam, pass your e-mail address on to anyone without your approval, or sneak into your library with laptop and scanner in the dead of night (unless we get your permission first).
